I am 73 and grew up on the Rathbone/Bruce films and they will always hold a special place in my heart. Speaking of that you can find a (still silent) remake of that starring John Barrymore (Drew Barrymore's grandpappy) A radio version of that with Orson Welles as Holmes can also be found here. William Gillette was the first actor to play the Great Detective and there is a silent film of his performance in the Archives. Jeremy Brett was, indeed, a marvelous Sherlock Holmes!īut as to being the ONLY actor to portray Holmes.
